Procrastination can be seen as a dream killer and a stress machine. To fulfill your duties in life, you must refrain from putting things off. Logically, due to increased time constraints, the longer you put things off, the harder it will be to get them done, as the task will be more intense. Procrastination can have a negative effect not only on school/education, but also on other dimensions of life such as work, relationships, health and finances. Humans are biologically programmed to strive for homeostasis, a balanced and stable state. When we procrastinate, we tend to engage in avoidant behaviors, which elicit stress and disrupt our homeostasis (Teitelbaum, 1956). Technically, we should be motivated towards set goals and show approach behavior to reduce stress and maintain balance. For example, for a student, getting good grades should be guided with approach behavior as they have internal feelings (feeling good, pride, etc.). ) and external incentives (receiving an A or a high GPA). As far as evolutionary theory is concerned, we must strive to survive by giving ourselves the best possible chance of succeeding. As times have changed, so have what are considered successful tools. In the past, for example, it was the ability to hunt and trade, as this ensured the survival of a family. However we now live in an industrialized world with a monetary system that you have to stick to in order to survive. With innovation and technological and medical advances, employment has become even more job-specific. Yet the competition lies not in primitive traits like hunting, but now lies in a fierce job market, influenced by unstable economies battered by stock markets. So you should want to get good grades to graduate, and... mid-paper ......or health if not managed. Michelle N. Gale found that college students who feel more stressed are more likely to suffer from physical illnesses. Gale (n.d.) also explains how this could escalate: “a college student who has high levels of stress and physical illness is likely more likely to skip class, which, in turn, could potentially cause even more stress.” Other studies show that life stressors can affect the immune system making a person more susceptible to infectious diseases such as colds or upper respiratory infections, which are due to negative emotional and cognitive states. (Cohen, 1993). Procrastination should not be taken lightly. There are many reasons to avoid this behavior. It can disturb your internal balance (homeostasis), weaken your immune system, induce negative thoughts and emotions, and can have a negative impact on academic success.
