In the 20th century, a new form of government emerges, totalitarianism. This new government was the path to complete and total control over people's lives. This way of control also takes away all the freedoms of the individual person. There are several ways to impose this type of power. These different means of power come in many different forms. First, totalitarianism is carried out by a strong leader, usually a dictator. These people in control are in complete control and are the supreme ruler. These rulers will use different ways to control the people. One way is military terrorism. This simply happened when the use of the military and violence was used to keep people under control, or scare them into acting in a certain way. Another means of power is education. Now this kind of education is different, it is the way of glorifying the government in the eyes of the people. Early on people are told that the government is behind all the great things in the world and that they should be grateful. A final way in which rulers maintain complete power is of course censorship. Censorship is the act of blocking any form of media that does not benefit the government. These can be sources such as newspapers, radio, advertisements and posters. If any of these articles don't say or promote good things about the government, they will be blocked. So the population only sees the good that the government does. Joseph Stalin Comes to Power Joseph Stalin was born on December 18, 1878 in Gori, Georgia. As a child he had many health problems. This included smallpox and two adjacent toes.
