Green is the new blackWhat if you knew that you were destroying the earth every day, minute, hour, second of your life? People, humans, are harming the earth. Without recycling everything we use, without reducing pollution caused by cars and machinery, or without reducing our use of water, we damage our only home, the earth. Every second, an additional 1.5 acres of rainforest is lost to land development and deforestation, resulting in huge habitat losses. Another 36 US states expect local water shortages at the state level, 64 million tons of materials will end up in landfills. Are you ready to start going green yet? We can recycle our waste, have clean and efficient cars and cars, or simply use less water. These everyday things can change a lot in the way you live and the planet. If we continue not to recycle, not conserve energy or clean air, we will kill our home and ultimately us humans. Throwing away items that can be recycled reduces the energy, water and natural resources that can be saved through recycling. Household batteries and electronic devices often contain hazardous chemicals that, if sent to a local landfill, can leak through the bottom barrier and pollute groundwater. This can contaminate everything from the soil in which our food grows to the water that eventually leaks from aquifers into tap water—many of these chemicals cannot be removed from the drinking water supply. Or from crops harvested from contaminated fields. The risks to human health are monstrous. If you think that's bad news, here's more. Did you know that 137 is the number of species of plants, animals and insects lost every day due to rainforest deforestation? This equates to approximately 50,000 species per year. This can be very bad for the human race, losing so many species... middle of paper... generations? By going green we can save our home and prevent it from diminishing under our feet. By making better choices as individuals we can save our homes and stay healthy. We can recycle simple products, turn down the thermostat and use less water. By doing these things we can save our home one green at a time. So go ahead, help us save our home, your home, go green. Works Cited “What's the Big Deal” Go Green Initiative. 2007-2009. Network.
