Armed officers in schoolsDuring their educational years, children go to school to get an education, to hang out with friends, to get excise taxes and many more things. America should have armed officers in public schools. Because children spend most of their time during the day and year at school, they should feel safe in that environment. That may soon change, as school safety lags behind amid the current increase in school shootings. School shootings have started to occur more often in the United States, from elementary schools all the way up to universities. How should school systems solve this problem? One solution that could be the most effective is to have more armed officers in schools. Let's start with some major school shootings that lacked armed officers, when the resource officer was able to stop a potential shooting, and the reasons why we should have an armed officer. One of the most eye-opening school shootings took place on April 20, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado. Thirteen students were killed and twenty injured in the middle of the day while attending school at Columbine High School. Two armed students opened fire just outside the building, then entered and killed other students and faculty members. This rampage lasted just under 45 minutes. The students then turned the weapons on themselves and ended their lives. The police did not show up in a reasonable time, which led the families to file lawsuits against the police department and the school. During this time there was only one resource officer in the high school. He stood in the parking lot watching children come and go. One of the victims' parents said: "There was no one in that school who had a gun other than the two killers, and... in the middle of the paper... it's "so safe your hallway or pod is the way which you do" (Gumbrecht, Jamie). Which may mean having armed officers walking the halls, making sure the school is safe from any harm that could potentially happen. Having armed officers in schools can help student safety and could help to stop mass shootings or reduce the number of shooting victims Making schools safer should be an important topic to talk about because we want students to feel safe while studying. Schools should study past shootings and current ones. been avoided, to make schools safer and almost worry-free Not having officers in schools has only caused more harm and left schools in a vulnerable state for any kind of safety risks our youth is better than not having. no protection.
