Family OverviewThe Grapes are a family living in a rural, economically depressed community. Grape family members currently residing in the family home are biological mother Bonnie Grape, who is unemployed and 54 years old. Amy Grape, the eldest daughter, is unemployed and is currently 34 years old. Gilbert Grape, the older male brother who works at a local grocery store and is currently 24, years old. Arnie Grape is Gilbert's younger brother and is currently turning 18 years old. Arnie reaching his 18th birthday is considered something of a triumph by the Grape family, as Arnie suffers from a debilitating medical condition that has not only prevented him from reaching age-appropriate developmental milestones, but also threatens to considerably shorten his life expectancy of life. The youngest sister, Ellen Grape, is currently employed at a local ice cream shop and is 16 years old. In addition to the previously mentioned family members there are two people who are no longer present in the family home environment. Larry Grape, the only brother who left the family home, currently works as a flight attendant and is 32 years old. Bonnie Grape's ex-spouse, Albert Grape, biological father of all the children in the Grape household has passed away. Mr. Grape had committed suicide some time ago by hanging himself in the basement of the house where the Grapes continue to reside. The circumstances of Mr. Grape's death are important factors to consider when evaluating the Grape family, as the psychological effects of this event are still grappling with the family unit.
