He lived during the latter part of the Baroque period. He never really left where he lived, practically his whole life was in central Germany, yet he studied all the music of the composers of that era. His music shows that he learned and adapted the music of many different countries, including French, German and Italian composers. However, for much of his life Bach was forced to write sacred music. Bach wrote music for all genres, except opera. In Bach's time people wrote mostly in the classical style, however Bach loved to compose in the baroque genre. This is why it was said that when Bach died the baroque genre also died.
