During the post-classical era of ancient history, many different civilizations coexisted throughout much of the then-known world. Many of the ruling empires in that period had textbook-worthy advancements and their fair share of conflicts, however none would create such an impact on all parts of the world as the Mongols did. The Mongols, originally a nomadic group who settled the steppes of Central Asia, began the greatest conquest in recorded history during the 13th century. By the end of their reign, the Mongols acquired a vast area of territory that stretched between continents and also earned a reputation as barbarians. It is crucial that the Mongols are rightly labeled as civilized because they did not fit the idea of what barbarism is. Contrary to popular belief, the Mongols did in fact have a culture enriched by trade and showed a level of mutual respect through their codes of conduct. Furthermore, although it may seem that the Mongols had no standard morality resulting from their cruel battle tactics, in fact they did as they demonstrated this with their laws against theft and adultery. All of this suggests that the Mongols were far from being barbarians as many claim in history and instead of wreaking havoc during that period, they helped create a solid foundation of peace and stability..
