The Internet is a global networking system commonly used in 21st century society. Although it is easy to use, it is easily abused. It is essential to realize that “this great tool is just that, a tool, not a lifestyle” (“What are the effects of social media on our youth?” 1). Young people are the future generation; however, children grow up in a sea of electronic media. For centuries communication has been face to face and as children we learn communication skills that are used throughout our lives. Currently, social media represents the main means of communication and, in particular, “95% of all adolescents aged 12 to 17 are now online” (Adolescent Fact Sheet 1). Communication builds relationships, trust and understanding. Technology should enhance communication, rather than dictate it. Communicating via social networks allows the user to manipulate the conversation and is easier than talking face to face. In conclusion, social media has had a negative impact on society and has deleteriously changed the youth generation. Social media allows people all over the world to communicate and message each other almost instantly. It is a great communication tool for making friends or talking to relatives or loved ones who live far away. Additionally, many young children struggle when it comes to social skills. Face-to-face conversation can be intimidating and scary for many children. Talking online with classmates or friends is a great way for shy kids to build friendships. Many people post their information online, so social media allows people to make friends with the same interests or hobbies. Taking photos is a very popular hobby nowadays. For example, “over 200,000 images arrive on Facebook alone every minute” (Horaczek 1)....... middle of the paper……Roma problems” (Stein 1). Being so easily accessible, social media can easily take up much of your day and turn into a major distraction. “It has become painfully obvious that our technology has surpassed our humanity” (“Brainy Quotes” 1).
