Unlike Garrett, Tyrec's parents cannot afford to invest in Tyrec as much as most middle-class parents would. Tyrec is an example of the other educational approach defined by Lareau; natural growth. In the natural process of growing up, children have more unstructured time and therefore create their own activities for fun. This parenting style does not prepare children to deal with very structured environments, such as school. Tyrec is a perfect example of natural growth style of child rearing. Since his parents don't have much time to spend with him and don't have time to hire help, this leads Tyrec to live his daily life according to his own plan and has the freedom to do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Because of this lack of social agenda, children like Tyrec do not learn the same basic rules of society that a middle-class boy like Garret learns. As seen in the Lareau study, naturally growing families tend to be more individualistic, meaning that an activity one family member might do will not affect other members. Coming from a family with a natural growth style, Tyrec will mainly lack cultural capital. This is because, as mentioned before, he will not be used to a structured environment such as school, so he will probably struggle to access it, and therefore his education may not reach high levels.
