Desdemona's eternal love In relationships there cannot be two stubborn characters; Someone has to sit in the backseat every now and then. Desdemona's goal throughout this play was to be the strong woman as we know her, but to preserve her unconditional love for Othello. At the beginning of Othello, the reader sees that Desdemona is a character who is willing to stand up for the things she wants. believes in. Shakespeare writes: "My noble father, I perceive here a divided duty. To thee am I bound by life and education. My life and my education both teach me how to respect thee: thou art the lord of duty; I am thus far thine daughter. But here is my husband; And as much duty as my mother showed thee, preferring thee to her father, So much I dare to profess it Because of the Moor my lord (I.iii .181-189).” Immediately the reader learns that she is not afraid to express her opinion to her powerful father, for the sake of her newfound love for Othello.
