Margaret Somerville, author, editor, and co-editor of numerous books and journal articles opposing the use of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide and who is also the professor of law Samuel Gale, Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and founding director of the Center for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill University, Montreal, wrote the article on the Internet entitled “Against Euthanasia”. In the article Somerville states outright that any type of euthanasia or medically assisted suicide is completely and utterly wrong under all circumstances. He offers the two main reasons why he considers the practice of euthanasia completely immoral and unacceptable. The first major reason given is “that it is wrong for one human being to intentionally kill another, except in self-defense.” The second key reason given is “that the harms and risks of legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide far outweigh any benefits.” Somerville believes that euthanasia advocates base their arguments on emotions rather than logic and use dramatic and compelling stories to make their points. He then goes on to say, “Legalizing euthanasia would fundamentally change the way we understand ourselves, human life, and its meaning.” Another point made in the article is that if doctors and nurses were allowed to assist in the deaths of their patients, the trustworthiness of doctors would be distorted and patients would live in fear of going to the hospital and receiving treatment for anything. illness, disease or problem they may have (Somerville) He concludes his article by underlining...... middle of the paper ......de predicts a quick and painless death, contrary to what was expected. months of suffering that a terminally ill patient must endure in normal circumstances." The reason euthanasia advocates want to legalize euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide is not to provide a new way for people to commit suicide or to allow doctors to kill their patients, but rather to offer suffering people and they suffer greatly a way to die with dignity on their own terms. It is in no way intended to be atrocious or shameful. Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are not intended to be forced or imposed on a person in any way, but are options and. only options for those who, after being informed of all other possible procedures and ways of living, no longer see any point in continuing the fight for survival and would like to end their life without further suffering and pain.
