The history of scholastic wrestling in the United States is closely linked to the development of college wrestling. The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association held its first tournament in 1905, which soon sparked many other wrestling tournaments for both college students and high school students. College and high school wrestling grew especially after the standardization of NCAA wrestling rules, which soon applied to both collegiate and scholastic wrestling (with modifications at high schools). Other colleges, universities, and junior colleges began offering dual meets and tournaments, including championships, and holding wrestling seasons. There were interruptions in wrestling seasons due to World War I and World War II, but especially in high schools, state association wrestling championships sprang up in several regions in the 1930s and 1940s. As amateur wrestling grew after World War II, various collegiate athletic conferences also increased the number and quality of their wrestling competitions, with more wrestlers progressing to wrestling in high school, being recruited, and participating in collegiate competitions.
