Topic > The Roman Laws - 795

Aristotle once said “Law is order, and good law is good order”. This is why for many thousands of years different societies have enacted numerous laws to limit people's dangerous impulses and inclinations. Laws have been made to help people navigate the world around them, but in the process of creating laws, many laws are controversial. Some laws may be good, some bad, some just interesting. But many laws make people question their importance. Comparing the laws of ancient Rome with the laws of today you can see that some laws are very similar while others have become extinct over time. As society has changed, so have the rules and regulations. In ancient Rome all laws were written on tablets and placed in the center of the city. They were called the Twelve Tables. Being the center of the city they were physically accessible to all people. Although understanding the laws was difficult because many Romans could not read, thus creating a problem with the metal accessibility of the laws. Without this understanding you would not know many laws and how not to break them. This is similar to today's law because all laws are written in legal terminology so unless you know how to understand legal terminology, you will have difficulty understanding many of the finer points of the law. Roman laws also decimated people based on gender and social class and still in the world many places discriminated against people based on gender, social class, sexual orientation and religion. But some laws are different, such as laws banning pluggers from being thrown off cliffs, which would not be considered morally ethical today. Rome had many good and sensible laws... middle of paper... looking at the twelve tables and comparing them to today's laws you can see that while many laws are not relevant, those that are still relevant create the best order and from this order let's create a society that can function on its own.
