Pai Heroic Journey A hero is a person who can endure danger and is not afraid to face challenges. In the film “Whale Rider”, a young girl with those exact characteristics, Pai, changes everything within her Maori community. Her dedication to equality in her community and bettering herself is different from how everyone views women. The men in his community were considered superior. Pai was despised because of her unfeminine attributes and her refusal to listen to her grandfather. Throughout Pai's journey, he always had a troubled relationship with his grandfather. Pai's childish characteristics threaten her grandfather's traditional beliefs and the Māori community, leading to a series of events on her journey to heroism. Pai is considered a great heroine for her baffling birth into the world, her transcendent gender, and her effects on following instincts. For a typical hero in any story or movie, there is always something that stands out. Whether inexplicable or unexpected, a mysterious event usually occurs that symbolizes a hero's personality and life. Pai's entry into the world is shown and visualized in a unique setting at the beginning of the film. Pai was born together with her twin brother who died mysteriously at birth. His grandfather, who desperately wanted a grandson, was disgusted and disliked Pai because of his gender. Pai's grandfather was ignorant of Pai's present and the characteristics in which he gives himself. Pai's miraculous survival at birth proves that he has a powerful personality that never gives up. In the movie "Whale Rider", Pai's birth symbolizes multiple outcomes of who and what he will become. Pai living with her brother was a powerful symbol of her survival, which and...... middle of paper ...... to her husband, Pai's grandfather, stating that he is not responsible. All it took was Pai's faith to not limit herself based on her gender and change her community's vision for the better. Reflecting on the film, a scene where everyone gave up to save the whales, Pai follows his instincts and rides the whale to shore. As everyone in the community sees this amazing action take place, the Māori community quickly realizes that the time has come to change tradition. Pai's characteristics and emotional drive led her to endure challenges that could have set her back. During these complex events, she grew and matured as a person. As he faces these challenges, just like a hero, he gains confidence and inspiration to continue doing better. By saving the community from evil villains, he saves the community from its destructible tradition.
