Topic > My Expeditions Through Literacy - 867

I was born into a home where my parents identified with different ethnic groups: my father traced his ancestry to the Akan tribe while my mother was of Ga origin. This left them faced with the dilemma of what language to communicate with me and my sister. In an effort to be honest with each other, they decided on English, but between us we speak Twi and Ga. While this played a role in the development of my literacy, it was the journey through my young life, and at the culmination of this journey, my time in high school, that had the greatest impact on my literacy. In the years leading up to high school, my family, newspapers, and stories influenced my literacy. My father always corrected me whenever I made a mistake in speaking or writing. He was quick to warn me against using jargon. My mother also contributed her share to help my literacy. He started teaching me both Ga and Twi. Learning these additional languages has allowed me to better appreciate language and the mechanisms involved in reading, writing, and speaking. My understanding of this fact stopped my derision of people when they made speech errors. Although my mother read me bedtime stories even before I could speak, I only became interested in reading when I was ten. Up until that point my main source of literacy, aside from school, had been video games. Surprisingly, I learned at least two new words in every hour of playing. However, my gaming phase ended when I couldn't access the games. Then I started reading newspapers every day on the way to school. The first time my mother told me to read newspapers, I told her they seemed lackluster. Knowing my mother well, she devised a plan to get me interested in newspapers. He knew that my love, fuck… middle of paper… got countless anagrams wrong and saved numerous lives, all using his brilliant mind. Langdon's actions influenced my thinking and analysis of information; I always want to carefully examine everything that happens. This has led to my friends labeling me as controversial, but on occasion these friends run to me to get answers to some of their questions. In addition to this, I have adopted different strategies for reading different materials and in distinct situations. Early in my life, I found it difficult to distinguish between reading for enjoyment, reading for information, and reading for understanding. However, I can now do these different types of readings simply because of my reading phases. Also, as I have already stated, I try not to ridicule others when they make speech mistakes. I hope to continue in this same light and increase my literacy to greater levels.
