Topic > Methods of mnemonics and episodic memory and memory

Mnemonics are methods for recalling various information through signals coming from physical objects, idioms or other external entities. Some types of mnemonics include the method of loci and the key word system. These devices are used as retrieval cues for memories that are not easily recallable such as long lists or certain experiences. Mnemonics are quite relevant to explicit memory or the cognitive system that stores conscious memories. These memories include episodic memories, i.e. memories of specific situations encountered previously, and semantic memory, i.e. memories regarding understanding the world (Gazzaniga et al., 2011). Mnemonics really facilitates the active retrieval of these memories. For example, using the per loci mnemonic method, or associating a memory with objects physically placed in a familiar room, it is easier for an individual to recall the episodic memory of a person's name. This is because the easily imaginable positions of objects in the room stimulate the memory of the person's name. These devices can be used in a similar way to activate semantics. ...
