Shea CullisonI am writing this article to address the moral question of whether or not doctors should be able to legally practice euthanasia. Euthanasia is more commonly known as physician-assisted suicide. It is the act or practice of killing or allowing the death of irremediably ill or injured individuals (such as people or pets) in a relatively painless manner for the sake of mercy. Euthanasia should be legalized in the United States because a living person should be able to choose to end their life if they suffer beyond what they can bear. Whether the suffering is physical, psychological, social or spiritual, they should be allowed to make their own decisions. The moral dilemma that presents itself with euthanasia is that a person is knowingly ending the life of another human being. Euthanasia can be a difficult topic to broach because it may never actually affect us unless we are in a situation where we should. we choose ourselves whether or not to ask a doctor to help us in our suicide, however, euthanasia must remain illegal in the United States. The main reason it should remain illegal is that doctors should not be asked to take the life of another human being. Allowing people to accept euthanasia would violate the rights of those who are supposed to carry out the procedure. What if they think it's morally wrong? They should not be forced to kill a patient simply because that person believes they cannot be saved. Doctors have studied for years to learn how amazing the human body is and know how to help people recover from illnesses and injuries. Euthanasia should not be an option for someone who believes in… middle of paper… assistive euthanasia.” According to the American Hospital Association, which is referenced in the article, approximately 70% of deaths in hospitals occur after the patient decides to stop treatment. If this “passive euthanasia” is allowed to occur and people choose to deny treatment, how is this any different from reality? If patients choose to die, but slowly and painfully, they should be able to receive an injection that will first put them to sleep and then die peacefully. If done correctly, euthanasia is a virtually painless procedure. One injection would put the patient to sleep, another would make his muscles relax, and the last would stop his heart. Euthanasia is not a ruthless procedure. Legalizing it could help many people find relief from their pain and suffering.
