Topic > The United States and Latin America - 2624

The American attitude towards Latin America can be summarized as the extension of broader global directives and the exclusion of foreign powers in the region. This was especially highlighted during the Cold War, as US involvement was essentially in competition with the USSR. Latin America was thus a mere pawn in the broader context of the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union for global dominance. The actions and methods used are also characterized by the lack of international authority, or an atmosphere of interstate anarchy, which has oriented their calculations in an attempt to increase their influence over Latin America. When analyzing the situation, it seems logical that the United States has treated its southern neighbors this way, due to geographic proximity and seemingly endless source of raw materials and labor. The history between the United States in Latin America is one that clearly shows both historical and contemporary interference by the American government for ideological, political, economic and social reasons. Ideological differences took center stage during the Cold War era, when the United States made concerted efforts not only to contain the spread of communism through containment, but to support anyone who opposed communism. Whatever rhetoric the United States adopts to justify its interference, the real reason remains the same. Similar to criticism of Russian involvement in neighboring European countries, the United States has pursued a nearly identical, albeit much more clandestine and long-lasting policy. Interestingly, we see the United States supporting caudillo regimes that would be considered fascist by European standards. During the height of the Cold War, the proliferation of tyrannical “banana republics” eventually caused… half of the paper…..withdrew from the treaty; Mexico ceased to be a signatory in September 2004.
