YellowSymbolism can be a key part of a story. Symbolism is a meaning in the story that uses symbols to represent it. It is “the practice of representing things by means of symbols, or of investing things with a meaning or symbolic character” (Symbolism). It is a hidden message that the author inserts into his story that could have multiple meanings depending on how the reader sees it. Everyone understands what they read differently making it have different meanings. Usually all meanings are relatively similar. However, more than one symbol can be included in the stories. In a story we read in class, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, there are two things that are symbols. The color yellow and the wallpaper are the symbols of this story. To write about both would have to be two separate articles. I will focus on the color yellow to help explain and show the symbolism. The color yellow has multiple meanings. One meaning is how yellow can refer to age as in the color white and how it becomes yellowish as it sees more years. Charlotte described yellow in a way that you could tell she hated it. “The color is repellent, almost revolting: a dirty, smoldering yellow, strangely faded by the slow sunlight” (Madden 722). That said, it could refer to the way people age. The reason this might be is because when you read faded you think it happened over time and when you read faded from the slowly turning sunlight, it confirms the word faded and makes it seem as time goes by slowly faded into this. Time can go with ages, which means yellow could speak of aging. Many people think that as we age we become less and less attractive. How some people may seem repulsive or you want to stay away from them because they seem impure... middle of paper... should have meaning. I have come to the conclusion that there are too many ideas to list them all. The ones I listed were only the ones I could think of, but after comparing what I researched I found that these are just a few of the many meanings that people have come up with. This shows that a symbol represents a meaning, can have a meaning for many. Symbolism is a meaning or character in a story. The characters are easy to understand and point out, but the meaning is where it can get tricky. As in the book The Yellow Wallpaper, it can be difficult to find the true meaning. Not all symbols will have a clear meaning. Most will have it where multiple meanings can be applied to that symbol. However, the meanings usually all fall into one general topic. As in this story, I believe that the meanings of the color yellow can all fall under the general theme of emotions in life.
