As a character McMurphy is not classified as a sadist but as soon as he joined the department his first mission was to be the head of the department as he said "Then tell Bull Goose Loony Harding that R.P. McMurphy is waiting for him and that this hospital isn't big enough for the two of us. I'm used to being the point man... I guess if I'm destined to be a fool, then I'm destined to be a good dad walkable” (24). People like McMurphy actively seek positions that give them control and power over others, not to cause them harm, but because they are unable to find it anywhere else in their lives..
