The Wrath of Deception in HamletThere are many instances in life where individuals are encouraged to deceive or be dishonest with each other. In a competitive world, people may resort to dishonest means to succeed, especially when the stakes are high. In the world of the Danish court, Hamlet is often the victim of deception and dishonesty. In turn, this dishonest lifestyle leads Hamlet directly to his ultimate death. At the beginning of the play, the first act of deception is old Hamlet's description of his brother's betrayal. Second, Claudio, the master of deception, seduces Gertrude; by becoming her husband, he ably becomes king. Finally, it is shown that Hamlet himself is not dishonest or deceitful. Claudius admits this to Laertes as they prepare for the sword fighting plan. Hamlet only uses deception when he is playing. The outcome of the game proves that being deceitful and dishonest with people can have tragic results. The first act of deception in the play is Claudius's discovery of the brutal murder of his brother, Old Hamlet. We see this when old Hamlet's ghost returns from the afterlife. Hamlet has a suspicious feeling about the ghost's visit: "My father's spirit in arms? All is not well. I doubt whether foul play and foul deeds occur." (I, ii, 255-259). We will find out later that the spirit of Hamlet's father has returned to explain the circumstances of his tragic death, "it turned out that while I was sleeping in my orchard, a serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark was falsified of my death brutally abused." (1, v, 35-38). Old Hamlet reveals to Hamlet the truth that led to his death: "The serpent that stung your father's life now wears his crown." (1, v, 3... middle of paper... word fight. Hamlet uses deception against Claudius only to expose him instead of hurting him. In a sense, Hamlet's use of deception and betrayal Claudius for his gain ultimately ruined him. Instead of enjoying himself as king, Claudius ended up pushing Hamlet to kill him. Furthermore, this shows that Hamlet's deceitful behavior and lifestyle at court leads directly to his ultimate death. of the work shows that a dishonest lifestyle can be harmful.
