Many of these protocols cause extreme suffering to animals. The animals are forced into isolation, getting social interaction only while being poked and prodded. Scientists will starve or even dehydrate animals. Worse, if animals are kept alive from experiment to experiment, they receive no recovery time between tests. They are forced into restrictions that prevent them from moving as they fight for their lives. Restraints usually attach to the animal's head, neck, legs and/or pelvis. Animals can be kept in total immobilization for weeks or even months at a time. Often, people in laboratories responsible for analyzing animals do not have the experience and training necessary to keep the animal alive and out of pain. Some staff members do not have the sensitivity necessary to prevent the suffering an animal is forced into. “Vivisection is one of the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse in our society, and it is sanctioned and legal abuse” (neavs.org). Millions of animals are used and killed in animal testing in the United States alone. Many animals will never experience the outside world. They will spend their lives alone in a metal cage, living a stressful life
