“On September 7, 1986, instant replay was used for the first time in an NFL regular season game” (Dudko). The use of instant replay in the National Football League helps officials determine where the ball is on the field. The umpires are not one hundred percent accurate in placing the ball in the correct spot where the runner is. Therefore using replays it is possible to find the right point. Instant replays also help officials make the correct call on the field to see if wide receivers make legal catches. In Super Bowl XLIII Santonio Holmes makes a historic catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers who win the game. To make a catch, the wide receiver had to have two feet inside the field with control of the ball. The officials clearly made an educated guess because the play happened so quickly that they couldn't definitively make the right call on the field. With the use of instant replay the officials concluded that the receiver was indeed on the field with control of the ball which resulted in Santonio Holmes scoring a touchdown and winning the game for his team. Without instant replay the referees would never have been able to make the right decision and the outcome of the match could have changed dramatically. Finally, instant replay is said to diminish the use of referees and will eliminate "conspiracies" in football. “I thought it would have been there by now
