Topic > Increase in adolescent smokers: 770

The number of adolescent smokers is growing every day. Many people in society continue to watch without any action as local businesses continue to sell tobacco products. Recent studies show that a large percentage of teenagers today buy cigarettes in convenience stores and especially at petrol stations. Additionally, most adolescents under the age of 18 say they receive cigarettes from friends or other family members. Around 65% of the children in each class said they had friends or relatives who buy cigarettes for them, and it was revealed that around half of the students said they bought their cigarettes from some type of retail store. Often at convenience stores or gas stations, few students were required to provide proof of age, even though all 50 states and the District of Columbia restrict tobacco sales to minors. Additionally, only 25% of 8th graders, 36% of 10th graders, and 40% of 12th graders reported having to show an ID to make the purchase. On the other hand, companies should be punished for selling tobacco to minors, they should lose their rights to sell tobacco, and they should pay a fine, especially if the minor gets sick, the company should pay the minor's medical expenses and the employee who sold tobacco to the child should be fired from work because smoking comes with many responsibilities that the underage teenager is not ready to face. Furthermore, recent studies show that the government is reducing penalties for selling tobacco to children, instead of fining companies $3,000 and banning the sale of tobacco products for 3 months. They decided to close a licensed premises for 2 to 7 days for the first offense and 30 days for subsequent offenses for selling tobacco by... paper... gasp. They may also develop a constant cough, excess mucus, and less resistance to colds. Finally, when teens get sick, they may find that they can't get back to health so easily. Teens who suffer from asthma put themselves at risk for stronger asthma attacks that may occur more often. Smoking can also cause heart problems and decrease bone strength. Furthermore, children should not smoke because they are minors and shops that do not check documents and sell to minors should be closed completely and should be accused of child abuse, because children only know that they are having fun without knowing the health risks and damage they are doing to their body, that is why it is up to adults in society to make good choices and guide children in the right direction until they are old enough to make their own decisions.
