In both works, the authors identify how the influence of technology is changing the way humans identify themselves. Carr uses his experience to explain this idea by giving the reader the idea of feeling the effect technology is having on their identity. “For the past few years I have had the unpleasant sensation that someone or something was tinkering with my brain, remapping neural circuits, reprogramming my memory” (53). It gives the reader a first-hand insight into how the influence of technology has changed his identity, changing his mind as a whole. He also gives the example of becoming machine-like. A metaphor he uses to explain that humans are becoming emotionless and less interested in certain ideas. They are becoming cold and mindless: it is the new part of their identity that alters their ability to think. While Turkle uses everyday life examples to highlight this point. He claims that people create avatars online to represent themselves the way they want to be. However, being able to change a certain aspect of an individual's life alters how they perceive who they are. According to Turkle, “people who become fluent in expressing multiple aspects of themselves may find it more difficult to develop an authentic self. Some people who write stories for their on-screen avatars may grow up with too little experience to share their true feelings with other people” (289). The meaning behind Turkle's words is that technology is influencing the way individuals see themselves and is remapping the idea that humans are social.
