There have been many discussions from time to time about advertising and the consumption of alcohol by young people. Every time you see an ad in the media you see ads that pertain to teenagers. This is not an accident! Although you cannot legally drink until the age of twenty-one, these alcohol sales agencies cater to minors. I believe these companies should not have advertisements aimed at teenagers if these teenagers are not legally allowed to drink the drinks they market. Today our young people are not only exposed to alcohol advertising, but they are also its targets. An article from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) discusses how, although alcohol use has declined over the past decade among adolescents, in 2007 “26 percent of high school students reported episodic episodes of heavy drinking or of binge eating. Over 74% of high school students have had at least one alcoholic beverage and over 25% have tried drinking before age 13.” This article highlights how alcohol is a factor in 41% of traffic deaths. High school students spend an average of 18,000 hours watching TV. While watching TV they see more than two thousand alcohol-related commercials every year, and that's just TV advertising. This does not include the advertising they see on “billboards, magazines, sports stadium signs and on public transport”. A truly shocking fact mentioned in this AAFP article is that on average young people will see 45% more beer ads and 27% more liquor ads in their magazines than those of legal age. drink. Between 2000 and 2007, of the 2 million alcohol advertisements on television, about 20% were for television programs that “young people aged 12 to 20 were more likely to see than adults of legal drinking age. Furthermore, between 2001 and 200...... half of the paper ......cial media). No statistics were found based on the percentage of viewers whose followers were minors, these sites are widely used by children and teenagers and a significant percentage have access to these pages.Works CitedAlcohol Advertising and Youth. 2010.
