From 1930 to 1935 Hollywood films developed and changed quite drastically, musicals in particular. In 1934 Hollywood's chief censor Will Hays adopted a code and began enforcing it in 1934. The code was called the Hays code and controlled the content of which films could, or could not, be released to the public. Before this point there was a large gray area as to what was being released. 1933's Gold Diggers was one such film; compared to 1935's Top Hat, the censorship and differences are quite clear. In 1933's Looking at Gold Diggers we have our double structure format with the characters being a group of showgirls dealing with unemployment and the difficulties of depression, and the director tries to keep the show going but lack of funds stops him . A group of upper class men trying to stop the wedding of one of their brothers who marries one of the showgirls are thrown into the mix, but coincidentally fall in love with the showgirls.
