'Valens', in Latin, means worthy. The Latin meaning of Valentine's Day is; Valentine and represents several holy martyrs of the time. There are many different legends and versions about the origin of Valentine's Day. The most established legend is that during 3rd century Rome, Emperor Claudius II made the marriage of young men illegal. He felt that young, single men made better soldiers. Valentine, a clergyman, thought this was a great injustice and would secretly marry young couples.
