It also highlights that by the end of 1950s, almost around 300 categories of industrial products started to be manufactured locally and among these textiles and ready-made garments were highlighted as the main category. According to Ekanayake (n.d.), Sri Lankan ready-made garments were released into the export market in the 1960s and the first destination for garment exports was Russia. He further states that the period after the late 1970s shows a boom in the textile and garment industry in Sri Lanka. Wijendra (nd) points out that this rapid expansion in the T&A sector has occurred for two main reasons. The first reason is the introduction of open economic policy in 1977. With the introduction of open economic policy the economy of Sri Lanka changed dramatically. It drove towards the relaxation of the strict rules and regulations regarding trade and investment (Wijendra n.d.) and the outlook of the industry was completely changed to an export-oriented strategy (Perera n.d.). The second major factor contributing to the remarkable expansion of the Sri Lankan textile and apparel industry is the “multifiber arrangement”.”
