The developmental pattern is when family members' expectations change to meet challenges (Katz, 2015). During difficult times, family members may need to take on more or different roles to manage and overcome challenges. This is seen with the wife because she tries to act as a caretaker for her husband when he returns. In the scene where the mother tries to explain to her daughters why their father behaves in a certain way, she tries to take care of him by making others understand. He didn't expect that he would have to be cared for differently upon his return, nor that it would be difficult. They knew things would be different, so to fit in she filled the role she felt her husband needed her to fill. It was a challenge for him to come home and a challenge to adjust to his return. By filling the role of caretaker, he is trying to bring it back into their daily lives. Additionally, while her husband was away, she had to learn to take care of herself and do things without him (Merolla, 2010). She was expected to be able to care for herself and her children without her husband's help. However the uncle intervened and temporarily became a husband and father, meaning that the wife now had to adjust to a new man in this role in her life. When her husband returned, she had to try to relearn how to allow him to do things he normally would have done
