Edward Hyde, the Doctor drinks a serum he created to get rid of his "evil" side. If, for example, you give a child a gun and promise there will be no consequences, the child will harm everyone and everything he sees. This is essentially what Dr. Hyde did when he freed his shrunken counterpart, Mr. Hyde. These secret pleasures are mentioned by all the main characters, who are middle-aged bachelors. In fact, the number of female characters is extremely low, and most are only talked about for a page or two before never being mentioned again. Homosexual tendencies could be inferred from men, which, shamefully, was something practically illegal
