1. The films A Female Boss and My Sassy Girl both convey the masculinity of postmodern Korean women. Haejoang Cho outlines three ideas to describe the changing role of women as Korea modernizes. One idea represented in A Female Boss is the “mother's generation”. As Korea was going through rapid urbanization and industrialization, women were affected by obtaining higher education and working in white-collar or blue-collar jobs. This is clearly shown in the film when Joanna is the editor of Modern Women magazine (A Female Boss). When Joanna takes on Yong-ho, we can sense that women have had a stronger role than men during the modern era. Furthermore, Cho explains that the women of her mother's generation were exposed to Western culture and became modernized women (172).
