Topic > Comparison between Romeo and Juliet and Maxine Hong -...

In Kingston's Maxine Hong - China Men a teacher meets students who perceive Romeo and Juliet very differently from what is commonly accepted. These students see it as a horror story rather than a tragic love story. What they witness in their real life (war, death, murder, etc.) influences how they see everything they encounter. Although these students may have a “colored” vision, everything they see in Romeo and Juliet is actually there. They didn't imagine anything. They went beyond the commonly accepted reading of the work and discovered what lies beneath the surface of all the romance and poetry. However, because they have not examined romance and poetry beyond seeing what lies beyond the commonly accepted reading, the story is disturbing to them. Students read Romeo and Juliet and don't see the love story society would like them to see. Instead, they examine what lies beyond this. They see a history of secrecy, sex, murder, suicide and disease. All these things are found within the work, but they are masked by poetry and romance. For example, these students see Romeo and Juliet as a story of “whispers, tiptoeing, lovemaking, and (children) going mad in the dark.” For the "normal" reader this is romantic. It is seen as a story about the most surprising kind of love imaginable: true love that ends in tragedy. What happens around them will certainly influence how students understand everything. In the real lives of these students they are surrounded by war, torture and death. Horror is part of their daily lives and therefore becomes part of them. It manifests itself in their thoughts and ideas. It also affected their reading of Romeo and Juliet, despite the teacher's efforts to show them the other side of the story. Another reason why this play is so disturbing to students is that the characters in the play are about the same age as the students. Because of this, everything the characters do has greater meaning for the students. The characters are their peers. Due to the students' everyday experiences, poetry is missing in the play. They ignored the reason, the enormous force that drives the characters Romeo and Juliet to do the things found in the play. This force is love. It is the main reason for all actions in the game.
