Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story about the revelation of true evil and a man's loss of faith. Nathaniel Hawthorne left "Young Goodman Brown" for many interpretations After reading the story a few times, one thing became clear to me What I learned from this story is that evil exists in all of us, no matter how good we may think we are what they look like. I say this because the people who attended the devil's meetings were the ones who attended church with him. The people he thought were holy and Christian. They were not holy at all Goodman Brown began his journey into the forest, met an older man, "he was about fifty years of age, apparently in the same social class as Goodman Brown, and looked remarkably like him, though perhaps more so. expression that characteristics" (DiYanni, 273). In Brown's ignorance, he does not realize that the one he is with is actually the devil. This is demonstrated when Brown asks a frightened question before meeting the old man: "Could there be a devil Indian behind every tree," Goodman Brown said to himself; and looked fearfully behind him, as he added, "What if the devil himself were right at my side!" (By Yanni, 273). This to me is ironic because then, "Turning his head back, he passed a bend in the road and, still looking ahead, he saw the figure of a man, in serious and decorous clothes, sitting at the foot of an old tree. He rose as Goodman Brown approached and walked on, side by side with him" (DiYassi, 273). Here Goodman Brown does not realize that the devil, in fact, walks "side by side with him" (DiYassi,273) . "Goodman Brown recognized a very pious and exemplary woman, who had taught him catechism in his youth, and who was still his moral and spiritual counselor" (DiYassi, 275). This woman's name was Goody Cloyse that Goody Cloyse recognizes the old man and shouts "the devil" (DiYassi, 275), he cannot believe it. Now he sees her as a "wretched old woman" (DiYassi, 276). saying, “What if a miserable old woman chose to go to hell, when I thought she would go to heaven! Is this a reason to leave my dear faith behind, and go after her?
