Robert C. Davis, Juan Medina, and Nancy Avitabile wrote the research article Reducing Repeat Incidents of Elder Abuse: Results of a Randomized Experiment. Their study focused on elder abuse and the effectiveness of public policies instituted to combat elder abuse. More specifically, the authors intended to study whether the New York intervention model 1.) Deterred violence, as a long-term effect, and 2.) Determined the circumstances surrounding elder abuse and determined the services needed in those families. The purpose The study conducted by the authors was evaluative and exploratory. Evaluation research is research intended to analyze the effectiveness of social programs and interventions (Bachman, R. & Schutt, RK:10. 2014). The authors state in the research article that their study is partially focused on public policies in place to combat elder abuse, therefore the purpose of the study is evaluative (Bachman, R. & Schutt, RK:10. 2014). Explanatory research aims to determine the causes and/or effects surrounding a particular social phenomenon. The authors of this study are attempting to determine the circumstances that lead to elder abuse. The main concept in this study was domestic elder abuse, which consisted of several dimensions including: physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, psychological abuse, financial exploitation. Domestic elder abuse is defined as “referring to various forms of mistreatment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of an older person” (Davis, R.C., Medina, J., Avitable, N.: 7. 2001).
