Topic > Essay on the Camp David Negotiations - 1094

Why did the negotiations fail? Many disagreements would arise in the negotiation process of the 2000 Camp David summit which would ultimately lead to its failure. During the negotiations, disagreements such as the division of territory, the dispute over Jerusalem, security and refugee agreements emerged. Unfortunately this article cannot explain all the disagreement, it will mention some. Most criticism of the failure of the 2000 Camp David summit was directed at Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat. In The Missing Peace: The Inside Story of the Fight for Middle East Peace by Dennis Ross, Dennis Ross states that Yasser Arafat entered the Camp David negotiations with an all-or-nothing mentality, such that "if the demands were not Arafat's, he wouldn't have done it." accept it." He claims he wouldn't have any of it if it wasn't what he wanted. In this book Dennis Ross stated that Yasser Arafat wanted a “one-state solution” instead of adjacent Israeli and Palestinian states, but a single Arab state encompassing all of historic Palestine. Arafat's reluctance to accept any offer other than the one he wanted led to the failure of the 2000 Camp David summit. Disagreement over the "right of return" was one of many reasons why negotiations failed at the 2000 Camp David summit This disagreement is related to the one above, due to Arafat's all-or-nothing mentality; he turned this easily negotiable deal into one that would disrupt the negotiation. The Palestinians insisted on the “right of return” of all missing Palestinians to return to their old homes in Israel proper. Israel would refuse this request; Under Israel's proposal, a maximum of 100,000 refugees would be allowed to return to Israel, however, at that point... middle of paper... ...d receive, whether it be good land or bad Earth. One problem that the Parameter has failed to resolve is that of the "right to return". The Parameter states that Palestinians should renounce their claim to an unlimited “right of return” to the Israeli state. The issue of the “right of return” was one of the main reasons why the 2000 Camp David summit negotiations failed, and since these parameters had not yet found a solution to this problem, they were destined to fail. Another problem that the Parameters have failed to find a solution to is sovereignty over the Temple Mount. As lenient as Israel was at the Camp David summit, it was strong on one issue; this issue was sovereignty over the Temple Mount. Israel wants full sovereignty over the Temple Mount, since this parameter would give Palestinian sovereignty, Israel should reject this parameter.
