In this assignment I will talk about the humanistic perspective. I will briefly discuss in detail the humanistic theories of Carl Rodgers and Abraham Maslow which are MASLOW'S PERSON CENTERED THEORY and SELF FULFILLMENT THEORY respectively. I will evaluate both of these theories and ultimately apply Maslow's self-actualization theory to my life.HUMANISMHumanism is a system of values and beliefs based on the idea that people are fundamentally good and that problems can be solved using reason rather than religion (Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online, 2014). Humanistic theories established in the 1950s due to discrimination against behavioral and psychodynamic theories. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow are the humanistic theorists who developed their own theories and further explain humanism through their theories. THE SELF According to Carl Rogers (as cited in Weiten, 2014), he invented a personality structure called the self, commonly known as the self-concept which is the set of beliefs about the unique qualities of one's nature and typical behavior. Self-concept is about how one sees oneself, for example the person might say they are better at something and actually prove the oppositeINCONSISTENCE. Carl Rogers coined a term called incongruity which is a gap between one's self-concept and reality. Incongruence is the degree of disparity between one's self-concept and one's actual experience (Weiten, 2014). What Carl Rogers means is that if a person, for example, claims to be good at math and gets higher grades on math tests, this shows that the person's self-concept is congruent with reality. Doing the opposite of who you say you are simply means that your self-concept is incongruent with... middle of paper... APPLYING MASLOW'S THEORY TO MY LIFE If I am to apply Abraham Maslow's self-theory actualization of my life, I would say that I have a strong relationship with my parents and a great friendship with my friends. Sometimes I find it difficult to do things that make others appreciate who I am, so I just do them to feel appreciated. I always need to be with people even in the busiest times, I still want to be attacked and that doesn't give me any privacy. This really shows that I need self-actualization. In conclusion, Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers came with their theories which are Maslow's self-actualization theory and person-centered theory respectively, of which they explained the humanistic perspective according to their own point of view. These theories describe the needs that people should have and also know the structures of their personality.
