Topic > Child Trafficking in Afghanistan - 1414

People have heard through the media that child trafficking exists all over the world, and within Afghanistan there is no difference. In Afghanistan there is a growing practice called bacha bazi in which they exploit boys. It's a practice that was banned long ago, but is slowly regaining its footing in Afghanistan. Many believe it is casual to do this practice. However, there are many who believe this is wrong. Many attempts have been made to stop this practice, but to no avail. Practitioners must realize that this practice is wrong and must be taken care of. Bacha Bazi translates to “boy's game”. It is an ancient practice revived by “powerful warlords, former military commanders and wealthy businessmen” (“Introduction”) after being banned during the Taliban era. However, it is slowly recovering in the northern areas and Kabul. A journalist named Quraishi claims that this is “a culture in which wealthy Afghan men openly exploit some of the poorest and most vulnerable members of their society” (“Introduction”). These rich men will exploit boys and use them for dancing and sexual activities. These men strip boys of their male identity by making them dress as women; they wear women's clothes, fake breasts and bells on their ankles. After dressing the boys according to their tastes, they took them to a party and made them dance for hours. Furthermore, some men take boys to hotels to sexually abuse them (Qobil). The age of these children varies from 11 to 19 years. Most kids are expelled before they turn 18, or 19 like Jawad, who is 18 and about to be released. His owner Assadula explains that once he “starts growing a beard, his time will run out and I… middle of paper… the authorities, and no justice can be done to help the boys. The Bacha boys live their lives for the entertainment of these men and to help earn a living for themselves and their families. Others learn to live like a bacha boy and create a relationship with these men. Some will continue to do it reluctantly for money, while others will continue to embrace it and cooperate willingly. It not only affects boys, but it also affects women. The fact that men are not allowed to be seen with women forces them to turn to boys to release their desires. Now women are considered figures responsible for pregnancy and work. People must stand up against this abuse and help create awareness that this is a growing problem, and should be addressed immediately knowing that if nothing is done, bacha bazi will continue to grow and create a bigger problem later..
