Topic > Theories of social change from Harper and Massey's book
In its simplicity, when things such as resources or values can be recognized or supported as unequal, the resulting action of change can occur. The push for equal rights for people of color and gay rights is about equal treatment under the law without discrimination. It is the unfair treatment meted out to them by society, which considers them inferior beings or second-class citizens, that leads them to act in defiance of the current social order with the intention of correcting what they saw as an injustice. This tension arising from inequality, in my opinion, can be found in almost every aspect of social change and I am convinced that it is at the heart of how change occurs in a society.
