Worldwide, 7.2 to 7.5 million people die from terminal illnesses each year (“We have the answers”). Euthanasia, the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma, would put an end to suffering. Euthanasia is illegal in most of the world, but in the Netherlands it accounts for about one in 30 deaths. Although many people believe euthanasia is unethical, it can be used to put an end to rising medical costs after death of the patient, patients have the right to decide when to die and it ends the patient's suffering. Euthanasia cannot be justified because it is unethical and could become out of control. Many religions believe that euthanasia is immoral because it goes against God (BBC News). Even if it involves the killing of another person, the euthanized patient has a painful terminal illness or is in a coma that he or she will never come out of, so it is the right thing to do. If euthanasia were to become legal, many people believe it would cause an effect called “The Slippery Slope” (“Euthanasia - ProCon.org”). The “Slippery Slope” effect states that once euthanasia is legal, it will go downward until euthanasia is involuntary. Euthanasia is legal The “Slippery Slope” effect is irrational because if euthanasia were made legal, there would be strict laws and regulations. The cost of hospice or palliative care only prolongs life unnecessarily and even with insurance can become outrageous to a person's family. Hospice and palliative care are respectively the care of a person at home or in a facility with a terminal illness that costs up to $95 per day (“Find Hospice”). .
