"To His Shy Mistress" is a very interesting poem. The main plot of the poem is about this guy trying to pick up a girl for the night. The poem is not about the setting. I thought he was at a bar, from the way he talked to her and that's where most guys go to pick up a girl for the evening. We see this poem through the boy's eyes, by doing so Marvell gives a glimpse into his mind and what he is thinking. This helps draw the reader into the poem. It allows the reader to enter his or her mind as the poem progresses. We start to see the boy develop his words more and more until by the third verse he becomes quite desperate. In the first verse we see the boy start to make a move. He starts telling her all these sweet jokes about how he could spend eternity with her. For example, he says in line 11, "My vegetable love should grow larger than empires and slower;...." In these two lines he is trying to tell her how his love will grow more and more every time he sees her. . He will love her until the end of time. A few lines later he continues to talk about his eternal love. He begins to divide his love between the parts of his body. He promises her that he will dedicate a hundred years in her eyes. Then he tells her that he will dedicate two hundred to each breast. That last sentence about breasts struck me as rather funny. Here you start to see how his mind starts to shift towards sex. He begins to shift his thoughts from his eyes to his body. He's very casual about it. After the comment about the breasts he says and thirty for the rest. I can just see this guy talking to her. He puts a little emphasis on the breast comment, and then I imagine him muttering, "oh yeah... and thirty thousand for the change." The guy only wants one thing, and that is sex. He's trying to be calm, but in the next verse we start to see his patience wear thin. In the second verse we begin to see the boy's personality change..
