From the beginning his family panics when they can't find a reason why Samsa doesn't get out of bed to go to work in the morning. His mother even begged at the door: “Are you not well? Can I bring you something?” (507). Showing that she was truly concerned about her son's health and wanted to make sure he was okay. However, after seeing the condition he really is in, they no longer want anything to do with him. Throughout the day “his parents could not be persuaded to come and see him” (521). Even though they were so worried about him when he was first locked in his room and didn't know why, now that they know they make no effort to make him feel better about where he is. His sister began by bringing him different foods on a newspaper to “get an idea of what he likes and what he doesn't like” (517), and after time passed she began “hurriedly pushing food or other things into Samsa's room with its root” (528). His sister started by being kind to her brother and making him as comfortable as possible without worrying at all about what he ate or how he got it. He made it seem like it was all a waste of time. Eventually the family got to the point where they no longer referred to Samsa by his name but began calling him “It.” Even saying that “you have to get rid of it… is the only thing to do” (533).
