Class is something that is often defined by income, work and family background, the area they live in or even the schools or universities they choose to attend. This criterion is used to label people as a certain class and is something that can be seen in education through theories such as cultural capital. In this essay I will compare and contrast the differences between middle class and working class educational experiences by focusing on two main theories; Cultural capital and social reproduction. I will focus on the primary sector as opposed to secondary or higher education because I believe that primary school is where most children develop their personality which they carry with them into later life and is their first academic experience; so this is where social class becomes clearly evident for the first time. In relation to these theories I will research the topic that parents have a strong influence on their children's education from this young age. The first difference you notice between the middle and working class in education is the selection of primary schools as for some it is their first time entering academia. At this point the family as a whole is entering “unknown worlds” (Jackson and Marsden, 1966, page 99) in the process of selecting and applying for admission to schools. The middle class's aim is for their children to attend a successful school with a good Ofsted rating, just like the working class. However, it is more difficult for the working class to enter these schools due to a number of factors. Some of these limiting factors are knowledge of the system, economic status, or wealth; they may not have the facilities for paper trading and for strengthening social class through parenting children.
