In the story it is stated that the sniper "has the cold light of a fanatic in his eyes" showing that he is accustomed to war. Furthermore, stating that “he is used to looking at death” it was revealed that the sniper had seen many dead humans, in addition to killing them. When the sniper eats his sandwich the author says he does so with hunger, meaning instinctively like an animal. Even when he smokes he does it quickly thanks to the training he has undergone to become a sniper, his discipline. When the sniper kills the other sniper to end the story, his curiosity drives him to discover the identity of the person he killed. Coming to the realization of the bitterness and evil that the war brought out in him. Eventually the sniper looks into the man's eyes and discovers that the man is his brother, effectively saying that the sniper killed another human being because of the evil within himself.
