Introduction: In 2013, Penn State experienced a 1.6% increase in student enrollment. This year, Penn State University Park gained 46,184 new incoming students. Our research examines the incoming freshman class and the options they are given for choosing a roommate. These options include random selection, in which the university will randomly assign people to live together; Facebook, where students can search for roommates themselves, or students can choose friends from home to live with. We wanted to study the effect of each of these options and see how each of them affected the roommate's friendship. Does living with someone outside your home automatically mean the friendship will continue to grow or does it cause more problems? Likewise, does random roommate assignment have a negative effect on student friendships, or if not, what are the benefits? We wanted to investigate this question because we thought it would benefit students going through the roommate selection process. We wanted to do more research on which selection option was most successful when it came to becoming friends with your roommate. Literature Review Our literature review consisted of six academic articles that were studies conducted on college-bound students. The first article we found focused on how important communication is when it comes to making friends. McEwan & Guerrero (2010) talked about the benefits of communicating before getting to know someone. We based our questions on this article regarding communication to discover interactions between roommates. Another important article for our research by Canavello & Crocker (2010) also helped us create this...... middle of paper .. ....mate there is no right answer.
