Jerry Given recalled: "he conducted 62 executions for both electricians and by lethal injection" (ABC). Jerry Given felt that the lethal injection was the most complicated and most gruesome to watch, especially when there were complications with the procedure. While it may be said that state executioners could fill the role, Jerry Given tells us that he received very little medical training and the best he knew was first aid. This story tells us why the current system of training state executioners for these lethal injection procedures is impractical. Rather, if medical personnel participated in the state execution, it is assumed that these doctors can carry out the procedure professionally even when some complications may occur with the prisoner.
