Federalists viewed the national debt with great approval because they believed that having debt made people essentially good and trustworthy because if people paid and honored a debt, that meant who were good to their word and reliable. As they sought to renew the Article of Confederation with the Constitution, the Federalists believed in having a powerful central government for the reason that it provided stability. Their views on the federal government were that it should have a strong central government as previously mentioned and that the Constitution should not be taken so literally, meaning that their interpretation of the Constitution was more permissive and free as they often implied rights that did not they were written explicitly and verbatim in the current Constitution. Federalists believed in limited democracy because only the elites should have a say, while the lower ones should be silenced.
