To prevent cardiovascular disease a simple thing an individual can do is to do some type of physical activity every day. Physical activity reduces blood pressure, reduces LDL or “bad” cholesterol, and increases HDL or “good” cholesterol. In a combination of studies, the results of regular exercise reduced the death rate by 20-25% in heart attack patients (Meyers, 2015). Typically, when an individual does not engage in any type of physical activity, he or she is overweight. When an individual is overweight, it will most likely lead to some type of cardiovascular disease. A common type of cardiovascular disease is coronary heart disease (CHD). Coronary heart disease occurs when plaque builds up in the coronary arteries, the coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. If these arteries are blocked, it can cause angina, which is heart discomfort, or a heart attack or heart failure, which is when the heart fails to pump the correct amount of blood that the body needs to function properly. Another type of cardiovascular disease is high blood pressure, which occurs when the arteries are too small because there is a buildup of cholesterol. When blood tries to flow through the arteries the pressure is too high. Which can lead to damage to the body.
